Does Stevens have a training program
for inexperienced drivers?
Yes, we have a training facility located in Dallas, Texas
complete with classrooms, driving tracks and specialized equipment.
We also have several training partners located throughout the
U.S..
How much will training cost me?
The cost of your training-- whether it be at Stevens Driving Academy
or elsewhere-- will be fully reimbursed by Stevens if you stay
on the road with Stevens for one full year. We also provide 100%
financing for our students so there is no up-front cost to you.
How long is
the orientation program?
Orientation runs from Sunday to Thursday each week.
Is there housing available if I am
going through the Dallas driving school?
Low-cost housing is available with no-interest financing, if needed.
Are my meals paid for by Stevens while
I am attending the Stevens Driving Academy?
Payment for meals is the students' responsibility. If needed,
Stevens will provide a no-interest loan of $70 per week to cover
cost of meals.
How do I get to the Stevens Driving
Academy?
If you do not provide your own transportation, we'll send you
a bus ticket to get you to Dallas, Texas. We'll also finance the
cost of that ticket.
Do I get paid while I am training?
No, you do not get paid while training to earn your commercial
drivers license (CDL) . However, once you have received your CDL,
Stevens will pay you $350 per week for up to 8 weeks while you
gain Over-the-Road experience with a Stevens certified trainer.
During that time, you can earn up to an additional $100 per week
if you choose to help load and unload the trailers.

Can Stevens guarantee that I will receive
my CDL?
There are no guarantees whatsoever. Your success at earning your
CDL is up to you. Stevens does provide a highly-regarded training
program that teaches you everything you need to learn and increases
your odds of success.
Must I have my CDL before driving for
Stevens?
Yes. By law, you are not allowed to drive a truck on public roads
without having first received your commercial drivers license.
Stevens Driving Academy provides all the training necessary to
earn your certification.
Am I required to have a Haz-Mat endorsement
on my CDL?
Although it is a benefit to do so, it is not required.
How often do I get a paycheck?
Stevens company drivers receive pay within 24 hours of the time
they turn in their load verification paperwork. Pay will be either
mailed, wired or sent to direct deposit.
How is my pay calculated?
Drivers are paid based on the number of miles driven. Stevens
has the longest length of haul in the industry with routes across
the U.S., Canada and Mexico. That gives our drivers one of the
highest miles-per-driver averages in the industry. Plus drivers
receive extra pay and bonuses for various situations.
Does Stevens provide layover pay?
Yes. Drivers receive $25 a day for typical layovers. While waiting
for a trailer in Laredo, Texas, drivers receive $75 per day.
Do I get load and unload pay?
Yes, Stevens pays100% of the cost of loading and unloading. If
you choose to do the work yourself, Stevens will pay you to do
so, based on the actual labor rate established at the locations.
Does Stevens pay for extra stop-offs?
Yes. You are paid $15 for your 2nd and 3rd stop-offs or pick-ups,
and $25 for each one after that.
Do I get paid for all of the miles
I drive?
Stevens pays for all dispatched miles-- whether loaded or empty.
Is there a way to increase my income
as a driver?
Yes, we have several career paths that allow you to make more
money. As a company driver, you can increase your income by driving
more miles. You can also join our Alliance Lease program that
makes it easy for you to run your own business by leasing one
of our top-of-the-line trucks. Or, become an owner-operator with
Stevens providing you with all the miles you need to be successful.
If I am willing to run, how many miles
can I average per week?
There is ample freight to average 3,000 to 5,000 miles per week
(single or team).
What if I want to make even more money?
Company drivers, Alliance drivers and Owner-Operators are all
eligible to become Stevens over-the-road trainers. Trainers receive
extra weekly pay, plus they get paid for all the miles driven--
including those of the students.
What are the eligibility requirements
to become a trainer?
You will become eligible after 1 year of employment and having
90,000 miles with no major accidents and a good safety record.
What kind of equipment may I expect
as a driver at Stevens?
You'll drive a top-of-the-line late model Kenworth T-2000, equipped
with 75" condo sleepers.
How long are Stevens trailers?
We haul only 53' refrigerated trailers.
Do trucks have air-conditioning?
Yes, all of our trucks are air-conditioned.
Do trucks have cruise control and power
packages?
All Kenworth T-2000 are top-of-the-line with cruise control and
power packages.
Does Stevens "slip seat"
(switch the truck from driver to driver)?
No. You will be assigned your own truck, which gives you the opportunity
to customize (non-permanent) the truck to your tastes and needs.
Do trucks have Jake Brakes?
Yes. Our trucks are top-of-the-line in safety and performance.
Do trucks have Alternate Power Units
(APUs)?
APUs are being installed on all trucks in Stevens' fleet to minimize
fuel use and harm to the environment.
Who pays for the fuel?
Stevens pays for the cost of fuel for company drivers. Owner-Operators
and Alliance lease drivers pay for their own fuel. All drivers
benefit from fuel cards that can be used at designated low-cost
fuel stops.
Are radar detectors allowed?
No.
Do Stevens trucks have satellite communications?
Yes. All trucks are equipped with a satellite antennae for 2-way
QualComm communications, which allows drivers to receive load
assignments, mapping, fuel stop directions, weather conditions
and email.
Does Stevens pull doubles?
No.
How often can I expect to get home
when driving for Stevens?
You'll get home on a regular basis, depending on the type of route
you are assigned. Local routes get you home every night, regional
and dedicated routes allow drivers to get home every 7 to 10 days,
and drivers on national routes get home every 3 to 4 weeks.
What if I want to take a rider on the
truck?
After a driver has completed 90 days solo, he or she may have
a passenger who is 18 years of age or older. During summer months
riders may be 10 years of age or older.
What if I need to get home for an emergency
or special occasion?
Stevens dispatchers work with our drivers to ensure they get home
for these situations. We've usually got a load heading near to
where you need to be when you need to be there.
Does Stevens have forced dispatch?
Stevens company drivers are assigned loads based on greatest utilization,
efficiency and profitability for both Stevens and the driver.
Does Stevens have forced routing?
We use OptiStop routing software in our trucks to assign drivers
the best up-to-the-moment routes that minimize safety hazards,
fuel consumption and travel time.
Does Stevens provide toll cards?
Yes, Stevens uses E-Z Pass toll cards for most toll roads.
Do I have to take a physical exam?
In keeping with the Department of Transportation regulations,
all new hires are required to pass a D.O.T. physical and drug
test. Stevens will schedule and pay for your exam at one of our
approved clinics.
